Manning did travel with the team to first exhibition game, which is a positive sign in his rehab progress. If he doesn't take the field by the third preseason game, his status will have to be re-evaluated.

It's refreshing to hear Dungy's optimism compared to the alarmist Twitter page of owner Jim Irsay, who jokingly hinted that he was pursuing Brett Favre to step in. Dungy noted that Manning's consecutive games streak means as much or more to him than any other record. The former Colts coach also said Manning hates to miss one snap much less an entire game. We have no doubt that Manning will be under center in Week 1.

According to Mortensen, Manning is "hopeful." But today's signing of Kerry Collins combined with this report should send Manning plummeting down fantasy draft boards. Even though Manning has played in 208 straight games and the Colts handed him a mammoth contract extension a month ago, his rehab from neck surgery clearly isn't going as expected. Tom Brady, Drew Brees and Philip Rivers are all safer picks in the second tier of fantasy quarterbacks.

"I’ve never missed a game in my entire career because of injury," he said. "I sure don’t want to start in Week 1 of this season. My goal is to play – not just play but play competitively. I want to help the team win. If I’m able to do so, I’ll be out there." Manning said the decision will be made by himself, the Colts' medical staff, and coach Jim Caldwell. "I still have some time," he added. "I’m going to use that time. At the appropriate time, I think I’ll know what the right decision is."

Manning can start practicing as soon as today. The Colts say he will begin working out on a "limited basis" and all of his activities will be "scripted and on a controlled basis." But with nearly two weeks until the season opener, it would now be a mild surprise if Manning wasn't under center come Week 1. Even though ESPN's Chris Mortensen says that Peyton remains "very iffy," owners that stole Manning in the middle rounds of fantasy drafts over the weekend are sitting pretty.

Panic is now justified. Manning's back is sore, his triceps is weak and his velocity on throws is not there. All this stems from neck surgery rehabilitation which has gone slower than anyone predicted. In a statement, the Colts admitted that "as of now Peyton continues to deal with a complicated neurological recovery, the end date of which is unpredictable." His consecutive games played streak will almost certainly be snapped this Sunday and previous reports that Manning could miss 4-5 games appear credible.

Once Manning was pulled out of practice, there was never a doubt that his consecutive starts streak would be snapped at 208 games. The real question is how long it will take for Peyton to regenerate the nerve in his neck and regain strength in his arm. At this point, no one knows the answer to that. Kerry Collins will start Sunday as a weak QB2 option and the Colts figure to make a flailing effort at a run-heavy attack. It's not going to be pretty.

Manning's recovery timetable is 2-3 months at minimum. Per Mort, there's no word yet on the possibility of injured reserve. We imagine the Colts will hold off on that decision as long as possible, though the season is circling the drain. Manning won't play before Halloween and possibly not until Thanksgiving. Kerry Collins is still just a low-end QB2 in what will likely be a more run-oriented offense than it's been under Manning. Reggie Wayne, Dallas Clark, Austin Collie, and Pierre Garcon all take severe blows.

</TD></TR><TR><TD class=vaLink>Mort was given an "optimistic" recovery timetable of 2-3 months for Manning's return, but that would be an extremely aggressive approach. While many are speculating that the cervical fusion surgery could be career-threatening, ESPN's Dr. Michael Kaplan actually calls is a "career-saving" procedure. The Colts noted that two players underwent the same procedure early this offseason and have "fully resumed their careers."

The Colts will hold off on placing Manning on injured reserve for as long as possible, especially after he underwent a more painful procedure in an effort to get back on the field quicker. We won't have a more exact timetable until Peyton begins his rehab in earnest.
